Healing Justice

History

Healing justice is a framework crafted to recognize and amend the repercussions of structural racism and oppression. It provides a narrative to overcome trauma and facilitate the healing of historical, generational, and present-day trauma.

Resources

Healing justice involves the transformative practice of envisioning holistic well-being, situated at the intersection of intergenerational trauma, existing systems of oppression, and the collaborative shaping of feminist realities by collective creation. This approach seeks to address historical wounds, confront present-day power imbalances, and cultivate a future that is both regenerative and co-created through an intersectional feminist process. Healing justice acknowledges the interconnectedness of personal and collective healing and emphasises the importance of dismantling oppressive. It highlights that healing is a holistic process and that it is not a solitary act.

Astrea Healing Justice

Healing Justice: Building Power, Transforming Movements doesn’t seek one answer or definition of healing justice, but opens the door for there to be a multitude of ways for it to be understood and applied—always rooted in place and grounded in cultural and political context.

The Book of Healers

The book of Healers” is a strategic handbook, aiming to forge conceptual connections for social justice activists and healer practitioners. The book explores the Georgian experience of healing, care and political contexts that are tightly interlinked with the movement’s organising logic. The book also has a practical guidebook for healers considering creating safe space for activists.

Between fresh water and the tides

This collective systematization was developed using a Feminist Popular Education approach and carried out as part of the process to systematize the experience of the Mesoamerican Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders (IM-Defensoras) one decade after its founding. The systematization of the strategy for self-care, collective care, and healing contributes to understanding the process of building one of the key elements of the Feminist Holistic Protection approach, a central component of IM-Defensoras’ praxis.

Learning about self-care and healing

Healing Justice: Building Power, Transforming Movements doesn’t seek one answer or definition of healing justice, but opens the door for there to be a multitude of ways for it to be understood and applied—always rooted in place and grounded in cultural and political context.

The pact to care among ourselves

IM-Defensoras affirms that the crisis was already here because the problem is the system. The many realities and stories in our region and the history of massacres and armed conflicts that are repeated time and again reflect the imposition of an economic, political, and cultural paradigm rooted in colonial heritage, dominated by the capitalist logic of accumulation through dispossession, and sustained by racism and patriarchy. This paradigm dispossesses, plunders, and destroys the lives of all Mother Earth’s beings to satisfy the voracious interests of national and transnational power-holders, for whom the lives of women, peoples, and the commons hold no value other than as merchandise and objects of exploitation.
